Hebron, also known as Al-Khalil in Arabic, is an ideal location for anyone interested in volunteering or interning in Palestine. Holy Hebron
Hebron is one of the holiest ancient cities in the Holy Land and has been continuously settled for over 5,000 years. The city is believed to be the burial place of the prophet Abraham in the Tomb of the Patriarchs, which is also believed to be the collective tomb of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their wives. In Islamic tradition, Adam and Eve were exiled from the Garden of Eden and lived in Hebron. Additionally, King David is said to have relocated to Hebron and reigned from there for seven years, according to the Bible.
Tense Hebron
Compared to other West Bank cities, Hebron has a notably tense atmosphere due to the large presence of illegal Jewish settlements within the city center and its division into two separate sections: H1 and H2. Palestinian cities were placed under exclusive jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority after the 1995 Oslo Agreement and the 1997 Hebron Agreement, except for Hebron. H1 is controlled exclusively by the Palestinian Authority and is inhabited by around 120,000 Palestinians, while H2 is controlled exclusively by the Israeli military and is inhabited by around 40,000 Palestinians and 600 Israeli Jewish settlers.
Effects of Settlements and Occupation on Arab Population
The existence of checkpoints and Israeli military within the Old City has greatly impacted the Palestinian population living in H2. They face extended curfews, strict restrictions on movement, closure of Palestinian commercial activities, and harassment from settlers on a daily basis. The local economy has also suffered greatly, with Palestinians barred from using Al-Shuhada Street, a principal commercial thoroughfare, and many shops closed by military orders for “security reasons.”
